Bianca Kmiec (b. 1998, California) is an American artist who lives and works in Florida. Born in 1998, she began her artistic practice in 2020. Kmiec had an unusual beginning as an artist: prior to creating her first works, she worked as a model, beginning when she was a teenager.
Her artworks are made of cured resin, pigments and metals including gold leaf. First, she applies resin to her canvas with her base pigments before using a high-heat dryer to blow the resin across the surface, forming unique patterns. Once any gold pigment is applied, the painting is left to cure for up to 72 hours. If gold leaf is used, this is applied in a painstaking hours-long process before an additional curing time is needed.
For Kmiec her incorporation of gold leaf is a symbol of her enduring spirituality and faith. She draws deep inspiration from Baroque and Renaissance masters such as Sandro Botticelli and sees her work in kinships with Abstract Expressionism and its mission of creating large-scale individually inflected canvases which sought to tap into universal inner truths.
